In the little town of Howards, Minnesota, there is no one who is disliked more than the bigoted grouch Andrew Swanson. However, he has the kind of mind that can solve mysteries, and so when the skeletal remains of a young woman are found in a farm field, he is called in to investigate. They turn out to be the remains of a young woman Swanson had known in high school. Upon investigating, he learns that a couple other young women were killed under similar circumstances at about that same time, and Swanson uncovers an insidious plot involving some of the most prominent people in the county.
